Discover Komodo Day Trip: Mantas, Dragons and Padar Island
A Komodo day trip from Labuan Bajo packs more into one day than most trips do in a week. Our fast boat through Komodo National Park made six stops:
Trekking to the top of Padar Island for the famous viewpoint photo.
Snorkeling and chilling at the long Pink Beach.
Spotting Komodo dragons on Komodo Island.
The first Manta Point.
Snorkeling over the coral reef at Taka Makassar, where you might see turtles.
The second Manta Point near Kanawa Island.
Mantas aren't guaranteed, but the chances are good, and we saw some at the first spot. They swim against the current to get cleaned while you drift with it, and the boat picks you up at the other end. We also spotted several turtles at around 10 m and dove down to say hi!
The second Manta Point was less exciting for us, with fewer fish. Only at the end did we spot some baby sharks deep down, so look closely.
This trip was one of the highlights of my time in Indonesia. It's amazing how much you can experience in one day. Book it, bring your mask and go!

Best Time to Visit
Spring-Summer-Fall
Go in the dry season (roughly April to October): sunny weather, calmer seas and the best visibility. It's also prime time for manta sightings. The rainy season (January–March) brings rougher seas.

Easy-Medium
With basic swimming skills you'll be fine, but it's open water, so solid swimming helps. Ask the guide for a vest if you're unsure. Manta Point has strong currents, but you drift with them and the boat picks you up at the end.

Fast boats do the highlights in one day; sailing trips take 2–3 days.
Reachability
Car
Fly into Komodo Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo on Flores, with regular flights from Bali and Jakarta. There's no public transport, so take a car or taxi to the harbour, where the boats leave.

Choose a reputable operator: the currents in Komodo are no joke. Pick experienced guides with good reviews.
Respect the wildlife: never touch coral, turtles or mantas, as their skin is sensitive. Keep your distance from Komodo dragons: they're stealthy, and their bite can be deadly.
Prepare for the boat: drink plenty of water and bring motion-sickness tablets in case it gets choppy. I get seasick quickly but was fine on our trip.

Budget for park fees: most day tours don't include the national park entrance fee, so check before you book.
