Surfing the E2 Wave in Munich: A Compact Guide description

Discover Surfing the E2 Wave in Munich: A Compact Guide

If you're in Munich and looking for something beyond museums and cafés, it's time for a real adventure. One of the best things to do in the city is surfing the E2 wave, the small Eisbach wave in the English Garden.

Many people stop to watch the surfers in amazement, but only a few take the plunge themselves. This guide helps you get started and makes your first river surfing session in Munich a good one.

Spend a couple of hours practising and levelling up, but be ready for cold water: about 14–17 °C in summer and as low as 4–6 °C in winter. A wetsuit is highly recommended.

Compared to the more famous E1 Eisbach wave, the E2 is flatter and more forgiving, which makes it a great place to learn. A fence still stands next to the wave, but surfing is allowed again: you just need enough water.

Ready to ride the E2? Grab a board and let's go!

Key details for Surfing the E2 Wave in Munich: A Compact Guide

Essential tips for your visit to Surfing the E2 Wave in Munich: A Compact Guide

Check the water level and flow in the Munich River Surfing app before heading out. The E2 starts working above about 110 cm and is at its best around 130–140 cm (about 21 m³/s).

Wear a wetsuit (even in summer the water is cold), neoprene shoes and, when it's cold, a hood. In winter, use at least a 4/5 mm suit.

Follow the city's rules: surf only between 5:30 and 22:00, and use a self-releasing leash.

You can ride a longer board on the E2 than on the E1. Beginners get more stability on a 7' board; more experienced surfers can go shorter (6') for a looser, more playful style.

Don't want to buy gear? Rent it at SantoLoco Surf Café and take the tram to the wave, or find used kit on Kleinanzeigen and resell it later.
