Discover City Wall Klettersteig: Salzburg's Rooftop Via Ferrata
The City Wall Klettersteig on the Kapuzinerberg is a via ferrata in Salzburg that starts right in town, at the end of Linzer Gasse and about 15 minutes' walk from the main station. You clip in next to a car park, and a few moves later you're hanging above the rooftops.
Four routes share the wall: an A/B practice line, an easy A/B ledge route, a variant with a panorama ladder up to C, and the original Kapuziner-Gams route with overhanging D/E and E sections. It's free to use, with about 50 m of height and 20–60 minutes on the cable. You top out at a viewpoint, then walk down to Linzer Gasse.
The wall is closed from March to June for nesting birds, so plan a summer or autumn afternoon. Gear up and send it above Salzburg!

Essential tips for your visit to City Wall Klettersteig: Salzburg's Rooftop Via Ferrata
Check the closure: the City Wall is closed from 1 March to 30 June for nesting birds, and you're not allowed on it in bad weather. July to October is your window.
Pick your line: the original Kapuziner-Gams route is overhanging and very strenuous, with D/E and E sections. Warm up on the A/B routes first and only go for it if you have strong arms.
Bring your own kit: the via ferrata is free, but we don't know of any rental nearby. Pack a via ferrata set, helmet, harness, gloves and sturdy shoes. Children and anyone under 50 kg need an extra rope belay.
Dress warm in autumn: by late autumn the wall stays in the shade all day, so bring a warm layer.
Keep going after the exit: walk on over the Kapuzinerberg to the viewpoints for the classic view over Salzburg's old town and the cathedral domes.
Want a guide? The Naturfreunde, who run the route, offer guided climbing afternoons (tel. 0662/43 16 35). Mountain rescue: 140.
