Discover Saxer Lücke & Fälensee: A Two-Day Alpstein Hike
The Saxer Lücke and Fälensee hike leads through the jagged limestone peaks of the Alpstein in Appenzell, Switzerland: two alpine lakes, a mountain inn right on the shore and a dramatic pass at about 1,650 m. We split it over two days for a relaxed pace, but strong hikers can do it in one long day.
Start: Brülisau and the Alp Sigel cable car
Take the bus via Weissbad to Brülisau. The Alp Sigel cable car is about 3 km from the bus stop. A very steep trail climbs right next to it, so we rode up and saved our legs for the way down.
To Fälensee and Saxer Lücke
From the top station, the trail drops to Sämtisersee and climbs again to Fälensee. There's a restaurant at Sämtisersee, but save your hunger for Berggasthaus Bollenwees on the shore of Fälensee. From there it's about 1.5 hours up to Saxer Lücke and 1.5 hours back down. Stay the night at Bollenwees and, if the sky is clear, enjoy some serious stargazing.
Back to Brülisau
We took the simplest way back, past Sämtisersee and down to Brülisau. The trail is steep, so wear grippy shoes and take extra care in rain or snow, when chains may be needed. From there, take the bus from Weissbad again.

Best Time to Visit
Summer
Go in summer, when the paths are dry and free of snow. Wet or snowy trails make the steep sections much harder, and the Alp Sigel cable car only runs from May to early November.
Difficulty
Medium-Hard
Split over two days with the cable car up, it's a medium hike. Doing it all in one day is possible but hard. Expect steep, rocky sections and loose stones below Saxer Lücke.
Duration

We spread it over two days with a night at Berggasthaus Bollenwees. From there, Saxer Lücke is about 1.5 hours up and 1.5 hours back down. Fit hikers can do the whole loop in one long day.
Reachability
Car/Public Transport
Brülisau is reachable by bus via Weissbad; check the timetable before you go. The Alp Sigel cable car is about 3 km from the bus stop, and there's paid parking right next to it.

Essential tips for your visit to Saxer Lücke & Fälensee: A Two-Day Alpstein Hike
Pack sturdy boots, some cash, snacks and water.
Bring layers for every kind of weather. Conditions in the Alps change fast.
What it cost us: the Alp Sigel cable car is CHF 18 one way, a bed in a 12-person dorm at Bollenwees with breakfast was about 55 €, and lunch plus dinner came to around 50 €. Transport depends on where you start.
The ridge route from Hoher Kasten is a popular alternative, but the team at Bollenwees warned us against it in bad weather. Ask them about conditions before you go.
