Discover Grünstein Klettersteig: Bavarian Via Ferrata
The Grünstein Klettersteig above the Königssee in Schönau am Königssee is one of the best via ferratas in Bavaria. From the Königssee car park, a 30–40 minute approach leads to the start, and then you climb steep, exposed limestone towards the 1,304 m summit, with the lake and the Berchtesgaden Alps below you.
Choose your line: the Isidor route is graded C, with an optional D section over a suspension bridge, while the Hotelroute, the Räuberleiter and the summit wall push it up to D/E and E. Plan 2–3 hours on the cable, then head down past the Grünsteinhütte.

The via ferrata is open from April to October and closed from November to March. May to October usually brings the most stable weather.

There are several lines. The Isidor route is graded C, with an optional D section over a suspension bridge; the Hotelroute (D), the Räuberleiter (D/E) and the summit wall exit (E) are much harder. Expect steep, exposed climbing. It's not a route for complete beginners.

5-7 hours
Allow 1 hour for the approach hike to the start of the via ferrata, 2-3 hours for the climb itself, and 1.5 hours for the descent.

Start at the paid Königssee car park in Schönau am Königssee, which is easy to reach by car. Buses run to Königssee from Berchtesgaden.

Start early to avoid crowds and afternoon thunderstorms, especially in summer. If you are starting from Munich, consider taking the train at around 7 am.
Bring plenty of water and high-energy snacks. It's hard to find free water on the mountain. On the way down, you can fill up your bottle at Grünsteinhütte for a small fee.
Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip. The rocks can be slippery.
