Discover Freediving in Tenerife: A Beginner Course
Freediving in Tenerife is the perfect way to explore the clear Atlantic water of the Canary Islands on a single breath. I took a beginner course at Abades with Apnea Academy West Europe, the Tenerife centre of the freediving school founded by Umberto Pelizzari. No experience needed, just solid swimming skills.
What you learn:
Diaphragmatic breathing: the key technique for freedivers. It helps you use your lungs fully and save oxygen.
Diving on one breath: after practising duck dives, we dove to 5 m and then 7 m.
Morning breathing exercises: the instructor showed us a routine to do at home that can noticeably boost your breath-hold.
Calm, clear water and a patient instructor make it a stoked first step into the sport. Book a course and find out how deep you can go!
Key details for Freediving in Tenerife: A Beginner Course
Best Time to Visit
Any Time
You can freedive here all year. Thanks to the island's triangular shape, there's almost always a coast with calm water: if the wind hits one side, head to the other.
Difficulty
Easy
The training is tiring, but if you're a good swimmer you'll be fine. With a wetsuit, fins and a buoy, it's a very safe way to start.
Duration
3-4 hours
The lesson starts with the key freediving concepts on land. Then you suit up and practise in the water: duck dives first, then dives to 5 m and finally 7 m.
Reachability
Car/Public Transport
The course spot is reachable by bus, but it took us two buses and a long ride. A car is much faster.

Essential tips for your visit to Freediving in Tenerife: A Beginner Course
Make sure you can swim at least 200 m comfortably. If you're not confident in the water, work on your swimming first.
Conditions at Abades depend on the wind. If it's rough, the other side of the island is often calm.
Our best snorkeling spot was Playa Amarilla, with huge schools of fish. The waves were strong, though, so be careful.
